yeah the support aspect is why I took the plunge. There is no waiting for a more familiar OS as win 10 proves so I might as well get used to it now. You're not kidding about ugly! What were they thinking?! The switch went fairly smooth. I'm still figuring out what is where etc. Thanks for the welcome and Hi XJ

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

It should boot right to the desktop, right click on the windows sign on the bottom left and you'll find almost everything you need!

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

I just noticed something new. You can go to CP and right click on any application and create a shortcut to the desktop. This was not available several months ago. I just put my UNi-Xonar Audio icon on my desktop.

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

My 8.1 just down loaded 26 updates and installed them. I have been able to install shortcuts from CP like that for ages for ages on 8.1.

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

Great thread - I am going to follow your lead and stop obsessing over the X99 platform. I am certain the system you put together around the Z97 MB will be an upgrade over my current Z68 and 2700K processor. Thanks for your advise in the X99 thread.

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

Have a couple of tips that I want to share, might be obvious to others.

First is a custom color profile for monitors. You can go into 'Screen Resolution' on your desktop then >Advanced Settings>Color Profile. Here you can load a custom color profile. If you use a popular monitor chances are there are custom color profiles someone has generated on the net. These are calibrated profiles with improvements in brightness and color. They are easy to try and if you have never adjusted your monitor color profile before it could mean a big improvement in viewing quality.

My second tip is how to burn music CD's. I have not done this in years and it is incredibly easy to do nowadays on Win8.1. To burn MP3 to playable CD's just drag the music file to the right box. It tells you how much space it left on the CD I actually fat about 15 songs on 1 CD. Click burn at the top and that is all it takes. Awesome!
