Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

I'am glad I hung in there with W-8 and learned to use it well.
As it paid off quite nicely after upgrading to W-8.1. It give me
a very good appreciation for W-8.1... I really don't believe
anyone upgrading from W-7 or W-8 will the least disappointed.
But rather quite glad they did so...

through them all from Windows 95...
Hah! Got ya beat, I started with Windows 2.0 Although, technically, I think it was Windows/286 since the company I worked for bought a system for doing FEA on an IBM system with an 80286 processor and at least 1 MB of RAM I did the initial setup and learned the FEA app so that I could teach the engineers (I was a technician, but the most computer literate person in the company). Needless to say it was awful and we replaced with midnight commander or something like that.

It wasn't till windows 3.0 (IMHO) that windows became useful; win 3.11 (windows for work-groups) was probably MS's first watershed OS product.

As far as personal systems, I'm with you. I started on Win95, but I hated it. I switched to WinNT 4.0 after six months and never looked back.

As far as Win8.x goes, I'm planning on skipping it. I hope that Windows 9 (or whatever MS calls it) will follow the 'ever other MS OS product is great' rule and I'll save myself the bother of learning some of Win8.x's quirks. I already tripped over Vista, and while it was pretty good by SP2, I think I've paid my dues.

I can beat that, I go back to the early days of DOS. I remember when DOS 5.0 came out and it was like my third or fourth upgrade. I use to use good old XTree file manager, one of the first non-MS apps I bought. Those were the days when you use to get your kicks just playing inside a file manager. My first personal computer came with Windows 2.0 on it.

My first PC had DOS 5.0 also, I then upgraded it to DOS 6.2. Then came Windows 3.1, and then Windows 95. I still have all three OS on 3.5 floppies along with Microsoft Word For Windows and Microsoft Plus for Win 95.

I still have Microsoft Game packs 1-4. They came on several 3.5 floppies. Prior to DOS 6.0 my disks were 5.25" floppies.

Also, Windows 2.0 through 3.1 came on floppies. It actually took a long time to load Windows off of 1.2MB floppies. I had Windows 3.0 before 3.1 also on my first PC but I quickly upgraded to 3.1 (for workstations if I remember). It seemed a lot faster at booting and running the desktop. Use to play the crap out of Reversi and copied it over to Windows 3.1. First game I beat against a computer.

My first computer was an XT from EPS Technologies. It had a 386SX-25 CPU and I upgraded it to an AMD 386-40MHz. I also bought a Cyrix math co-processor at some point and then migrated to the 486DX parts. I remember in those days all you needed to do to OC was to change out a single small crystal-clock oscillator chip (soldered to the mobo).

We still use the same x86 PC architecture today, just more transistors, more memory, and faster.

Well, in the work place I go back to DOS. In undergraduate work, DEC 10 and PDP 11/780 (UNIX) and I programmed on an Amiga personal computer in a mix of BASIC and asm. In HS it was a PDP-8 and TRS-80 (Model's I, II and III). But, you have me beat, I never ran DOS on my own personal computer

If I remember correctly, you had to use MD-DOS to format and setup disks before you installed Windows.

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

I found a very nice surprize in W8.1 yesterday, they have 2 monitor Themes build right in that you can download and extend across both monitors, (for me this is great) they have to be the same resolution.

Looks great FVB! I will get Windows Pro 8.1 on DVD when I get past my SSD/backup drive upgrade. I still have some drives to sell.

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

One more thing on Windows 8.1, when you come to full screen app or program and you want out, Now this is crazy, there's no X to close it you have to go to the upper left corner and you'll see any open programs or app there you can right click and close...

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

Yep, I seen that yesterday when I was playing at the store with 8.1

After I played with it and got bored, I went to the apple store. I thought OSX Mavericks looked better and was easier.
