Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

Found this ASUS site:

http://www.asus.com/microsite/essence/

I have no doubt I happened across one of the best PC audio cards. I still study up on it and read up on other XFi cards and I am glad I went with it.

Based on this post I ordered another set of these OPA2227 OP amps. I think I would prefer trying the Burr/Brown that would be closest to the original JRC OP amps but hide some of the bass.

http://forums.overclockers.com.au/sh...1&postcount=31

Also, the Essence is exactly what I wanted, a high-quality single stereo out on dual RCA for bookshelf speakers. But, a majority of features I cannot use that I didn't realize before I bought the card. Before you buy any card you should look deep into the features and how they are used.

Well I got my LME49720NA Op amps today and installed them. The poster in the link above hit the nail on the head characterizing these amps. These do have a boom-tish style to it. During vocals the pronunciation of the letter S sounds cymbalish. It still has good bass though. If I would have seen his post earlier I would have ordered the BB OPA2227 in the first place. I should get the OPA2227 in a few days.

Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

Tried the Burr Brown OPA2227 OP amps the other day. In my first opinion all 3 OP amps I've tried all have plenty of bass. The original JRC OP amps that came with the STX offered the most warmth and I am use to that now. They say if you leave one of the OP amps in for a couple of weeks and go back to the JRC's they will then sound like crap. The two OP amps I ordered are more expensive and have better specs but I didn't fool with them for very long. Maybe the JRC's have a narrower frequency response and is why the audio sounds warmish but this makes them more forgiving to a broader spectrum of music.

Skully if you are interested in trying out these two types of OP amps for yourself I can mail them to you. They are the most sought after replacements for the JRC's.

Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

I fired up my music the other evening and I was taken back by crappy audio. I played about 4 different mp3's and they all came out messed up differently. A couple sounded terrible and sounded like it was dropping in volume as it played. I actually started freaking and then trouble shooting. I believe I tried rebooting, testing the cans (the cans sound better than my speakers by the way), and checking PC/amp speaker connections. I began to suspect it was the N22 amp RCA outs had gone titz up and . Also I have been breaking in my new headphones lately. I do this by keeping the headphones in a desk drawer and playing the TuneIn Classical playlist continuously during the night and during the work days.

Anyway, I went to this site again which I mentioned earlier and started reading. This site has universal Xonar drivers and the readers know the ASUS cards pretty good. I tried to follow some of the guidelines such correct speaker setup, setting Windows audio bit rate to 24bit, 41000kHz (Studio Quality), and disabling EAX support which I could not do. All these steps help to create better audio and eliminate bugs inherent in C-Media's audio EAX effects and from a high-DPC latency. A high DPC latency will cause the problems I was having.

First off, because of my setup I do not use the ASUS audio control panel. I use the flat frequency response in the EQ always, I do not mess with FlexBass which provides a low cutoff to the speakers, I do not like any of the audio effects, and since I do not use the mic out of the card I do not need the VOIP or mic effects either. The ASUS control panel is nice though and it comes with the audio drivers which I require.

The UNI Xonar drives just came out with a new Win8.1 version (v 1.72). These are modified C-Media drivers (who ASUS uses) that has bug fixes like fixing ASIO, changing default settings, etc. There are also some extra addons your can DL below. The software headphone switch is pretty popular and useful to others.

  1. Front panel switch v3.2*
  2. SampleRate switch v1.2*
  3. Microphone Array Enabler v1.1* (might be useful if you have an microphone array)
  4. HDAV HDMI enabler v1.0* (This application hasn’t been tested please submit feedback if it works or not; It appears it is not needed anymore)
  5. Acoustic Echo Cancellation enabler v1.0 *(useful for other Cmedia 8788 based cards that lack this setting)
  6. Stereo upmix switch v1.0*
  7. 7.1 virtual speaker shifter enhanced profile v1.0* mirror (profile created by Cu. This profile should enhance the effect of positioning in games when using Dolby Headphones and 7.1 virtual speaker shifter.
  8. Headphones ohm Amp switch v1.0 * ( works only with the cards that support this)
Anyway, these drivers looks like they suit me perfectly since I do not make use of any of the optional settings in the ASUS audio control panel. The number one thing the UNI drives do for me is they contain the C-Media drivers with the GX effects disabled (EAX support). Apparently C-Media's implementation of EAX has several bugs and also greatly hinders DPC latency which can cause stuttering in audio tracks and reduced audio quality. EAX effects are not generally needed in my case as only older games are encoded with this. The GX (EAX effects) from C-Media is known to cause BSOD's, and audio conditions. This particularly peaked my interest as I would get lockups in games while audio would motorboat in the speakers.

There are 4 ways to install the UNI Xonar drivers.

You can select upon install:

  1. Normal-ASUS Audio Panel
  2. Low DPC Latency
  3. C-Media Panel
  4. C-Media Panel (GX enabled)
I selected #2. I have been using the new drivers since yesterday and they are working great. I believe I am going to run through the installation again and use Driver Cleaner before I reinstall the UNI drivers to make sure all the ASUS/C-Media software is gone.

Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

Well I installed Driver Fusion and uninstalled all ASUS/C-Media/Realtek audio drivers and reinstalled the Xonar UNI drivers v1.72 with Low DPC Latency. No more ASUS audio control panel and audio is sounding delicious to the ears. All I need is clean quality amplified audio out of the two RCA jacks and that is it.

Capture.JPG

I also ran CCleaner. I had 216 errors and most were related to audio files.

Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

Not so fast, I didn't read a thing that was new in that short article.

+120SNR
600ohm headphone
changeable OP amps

Card even looks identical. The only diff I see is the STX II 7.1 model that adds the extra channels card.

If I hadn't found the UNI Xonar drivers I would be interested in the new drivers for this card but so far that is all.
