Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

Found a compatibility issue with the Essence STX and MS Skype last night when I installed it. It was causing a shutdown issue. Google found a quick solution if you need it. Skype has taken over MSM Messenger for those unaware. It has some cool features like click-call where you can call for free on websites that have that feature. Of course you can call anybody anywhere but for 2-3 cents a minute including cell phones. Messaging and file transfer between contacts is still free and it interfaces with web cams.

Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

It sure gets tight with my SLI setup. I kind of wish I could get rid of
internal sound card/Xonar Essence STX. The sound is so good its hard
to let lose of...

Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

I just ordered the Essence II. The STX 2 is adapted for Win8, that is why I want it.

Congrats, my Xonar Essence STX is in retirement.
Maybe some day I'll put to use again...

Re: * Xonar Essence STX...WOW *

The drivers are a bit different as in the STX II are not beta and the first set out are for Win8. The STX II drivers do not work on the STX I.

The only hardware difference is the STX II comes with extra amps (Muse op amps installed) and has a temp. controlled clock. Basically, the only difference I am seeing in the STX II is they made the package more fancy with extra audio amps and extraction tool. The card has the same audio processor but it is a different rev. The original STX came out in 2009. I am hoping for more modern driver support for the STX II.

I canceled the order last night but will probably pick it up again down the road. It was $309 from Taiwan so I think it will be cheaper when it hits the U.S. shelves.

Back on with this card. I will be set with this card, the Audioengine N22 amplifier, and P4 bamboo speakers - forever.

How are these cards for gaming? I know that they're pretty impressive with music but I'm not clear at all on how they rate for PC gaming?

Good enough! Here is a review from 2009.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mul...x_6.html#sect0

Back when the Essence STX appeared (WinXP) effects engines like CL EAX were the standard. The ASUS developed GX2 to provide the EAX effects at the time. EAX and then OpenAL are gone, nowadays it appears game developers have incorporated the effects into the audio soundtracks provided with the game and that they make calls to DirectX to incorporate effects.

XAudio2

I have used the Essence STX in watching game trailers and with my Audioengine sub, I hear cool sounds. My speaker setup is two small wall mounted front speakers 5.5" apart and a floor sub. For this stereo setup I can perceive a bit of 3D at times so something is working. If I were concerned about gaming effects enough, I would invest in a good 5.1 or above surround audio system.

I should get my STX II card in 7-10 days from Taiwan. Probably very few people have this card in the U.S. I only saw 7 cards available in Taiwan and it is down to 3 after I bought one.
