Re: Synology DS214 Nas Questions?

Got the new Nas a couple of days ago, got it up and running without any problems, very nice software, the job I wanted it to do is working perfect, the Sonos system is working with it and now the wife has our music library 24 seven without our computers running. The mobile apps work fine, I can play a go pro movie of us fishing on my Ipad and looks great (You have to have a good internet connection so it doesn't buffer) that movie is almost 4 gigs. I'm in the process of transferring all the pictures to the Nas it goes pretty fast the only thing that takes some time is for the app to generate thumbnails for the Synology mobile app!

Sorry that I did not catch that part.

Good that you are happy. That is the only thing that counts.

Re: Synology DS214 Nas Questions?

Well been a week or so and I'm really liking this NAS, Yesterday I imaged my rig and my wifes rig using the Image program in Windows 8.1 to the NAS, didn't take very long at all. I tried my laptop but there was a error message and wouldn't do it, I have a image on a external hardrive and tried getting it onto the NAS but got a error message with that too. So I checked the external HD and in propertys is showed 36 gigs, but when I checked the file itself it showed no bytes 0....somehow it is a bad image, I checked the other ones (Mine and my wifes rig) and the files showed 40 and 70 gig files, so those images are there...something to do for your Images make sure the image is there for sure not just the folders!

Re: Synology DS214 Nas Questions?

This looks like a very useful device/service to have, as I just realised that unlike DAS i don't need to have a server system up to access the media... yes, I'm a bit slow!... er, seriously i used to use my main system to store, access and play media but now that i have mobile devices and internet capable TV's thats becoming restrictive.

I like the idea of the speakers distributed throughout the house, although not sure where the player resides? Is it a feature of the NAS software? Sorry, i know theres a thread about them here somewhere...

Fv, do you know if gaming consoles would be able to use the NAS? And what about PC game installations, can they be installed on the NAS and run on a client from there? Could they be shared with multiple clients i wonder...

I'm also a little confused as to how concurrency is handled ... Sorry slightly off topic... But what if multiple clients want to access the same file at the same time for update?

I'm really new to this, the Sonos system is run by apps and has its own bridge which is how it connects to the speakers, you control what the speakers play by the apps (apps are on everything, apple, android, pc and macs), I use the Nas to store our music so Sonos uses it instead of my PC. You can have more that one person using a single file on the NAS, about running a game off the Nas I really don't know? When you set it up you control what a quest client can do with files, read only or read and write. I finally got everything working on my Ipad and android phone, my home movies, regular movies, all my pictures about 10000, and my music are all available (Its just like a cloud service but I control it), for the $310 I have into it its well worth it! Only thing I will do is install another drive and run raid 1 later on.

Re: Synology DS214 Nas Questions?

Ah, it sounds like the Sonos has its own central manager appliance? Is it running on a separate device that connects wirelessly to the speakers?
Sorry, the Sonos questions are going off topic, i'll read the other thread about them.
