27" iMac

Since there are three of us interested in going over to Apple. In my case the Apple - iMac

I thought I would start this tread. My thoughts in no particular order:

no need anymore for high-powered PC; don't make games like they used too;

MS's improvements and direction they're going is what Apple already has, i.e. infrastructure;

while not the most easy machine to upgrade, it can be done;

fits an upgrade cycle every three to four years, and brings the costs in-line with a PC;

refresh the brain with learning a new OS, as I do not even give too much thought anymore when fiddling with Win7;

effortless sync across my Apple devices;

time machine;

cheaper software (except Adobe Acrobat XI Pro);

and most of all, I like their OS and infrastructure.

Would like to hear from others who can think objectively

Too noisy from fans? How long did you actually have it?

Re: 27" iMac

Thanks Skully. New models have no DVD. SSD's are now available. Fusion drive (hybrid) sounds interesting.

Did you like the display?

I pretty much agree with all the things you have mentioned Jim. I have a new ipad for the last month and I love it. It just does what ever you want to do with it. I have it and my Blackberry phone, my PC all synced together and sharing the printers, the internet, email, dropbox, icloud with my son and thousands of photos of the grand children all wireless. If I was to buy a Apple it would be the all in one iMac not the Mac Pro. But I am like you there are other things in life other then up grading PC's every time something new comes out. I do not play any games other then Solitaire and just use the PC for a little book keeping, surfing, email, skype, banking ect. I do a lot of photo printing and really like the iMac monitor. I really like OS7 it is a very nice OS and easy to learn. I just may keep the PC I have now and save the expense of buying something new..

Re: 27" iMac

Thanks Griff. My sentiments exactly. The iMac will put a damper on these yearly PC upgrades!

I pretty much have our iPad and iPhone in sync with the PC. Using iTunes to do it.

It gets easier the more Apple devices you have.

I played with iCloud a bit. Lot's of potential there!

While the Mac Pro is interesting, it's way more than I need. iMac will be fine.

In scanning the iMac forums it seems the monitors start to give troubles at the 3+ years mark. Costs $500 worst case.

While expensive, it's not too far off the PC upgrade cycle.

Thanks Griff

Re: 27" iMac

I have quite a few friends that have iMac all in ones and have not had any trouble with them. We had one in the lobby of the Ford Store I used to work at since they came out with the iMac all in ones and its still going strong, its on 24/7. Also another alturnative is the mini. I looked at them before I did my last upgrade as I have a good monitor.

Re: 27" iMac

Good to hear about the longevity. Ford's always had good taste!

I looked at the mini. By the time you get it spec right, it's about the same price as an iMac.

Thanks Griff.

Re: 27" iMac

Could never go back to a single screen, so a IMac is out for me, plus Apple makes older hardware obsolete with latest software, which is a absolute rib off. Just look at the first Ipad does not work with IOS 7 and lots of software doesn't work unless you have IOS 7...

Re: 27" iMac

Thanks FV. iPad is only a few months old, and the iPhone is 18 months old, so I have a while to go. iOS 7 was a big update and it did require newer hardware. If I remember correctly the update was optional. Most of my buds are still using the iPhone 4. I'll keep this in mind. Very good point. Thanks again.

That's the way they make a little more money. Just like HP when Microsoft comes out with new OS HP does not have drivers for the older printer ect so they expect you buy a new printer. I waited about 8 months for them to get drivers to work with Win8. I bought a Brother printer for under fifty bucks that worked right out of the box.
