New modem/router and WPS?

I've just been setting up my new Netgear X6 Nighthawk Tri-Band Wi-Fi router and I've discovered a "new" feature; "WPS".

Apparently if I press the "WPS" button and do the same on a WPS enabled client the router will provide its password to the client automatically.

Sounds like a major security risk... ? flip...

No, it's actually very secure and has been in use for years. The main weakness is potential software exploits in the router's firmware.

Sometimes it's flaky - I can't get it working ATM between my Netgear R7000 & EX6200 at the moment. I suppose it will all work soon with a firmware update on one of the devices.

Congrats on the X6 Nighthawk, looks like a pretty future proof router!

Thanks XJ, i think so! It works as advertised too. The range is good with no weak spots in the house and performance is excellent.

I did have to manually set the channel on the 2.4GHz band as there was interference from somewhere on auto.

The menu is very easy to use and i prefer the browser console over the Genie app.

One thing; i will have to wall mount it. Theres just too much risk of stuff (like paperclips) falling through the vents onto the mainboard.

Re: New modem/router and WPS?

Thank you Skully, I'm enjoying it!
I've attached a 1 TB USB 3.0 disk that I had laying around to it and loaded up recent photos. Its fantastic that everyone can easily access the photos from any device using a browser now.

Just trying to get the smart Samsung TV to play nice with it.

Thanks fv, Its covering the whole house easily, no signal drop.
My previous router had low signal strength at the other end of the house, but the X6 Nighthawk covers it with full strength.

Re: New modem/router and WPS?

This is pretty awesome, i've got 2 PC's on ethernet and 2 iPads, 3 iPhones, a laptop, Apple TV and a Samsung Smart TV all on tne Wi-Fi happily doing stuff.
The iPads are slow though, which i've posted a seperate thread about.

I wish the government here would move more quickly with our new nationsl broadband network. I can only get 100Mbps at the moment with 1 Gbps becoming available later next year.
New buildings and homes are being connected up now, but established have the lowest priority

But at least i now have no weak spots in the house and a bit of a boost over my previous setup.

So i'm finally retiring my Motorola SB5100 modem (DOCSIS 1.1) after many years service. It has never failed or had any hiccups in the many years that i've had it.
