Windows 10 Will Be A Free Upgrade

Kicking off the consumer-focused Windows 10 event in Redmond on Tuesday, Microsoft operating system chief Terry Myerson announced that current users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free for one year after the operating system launches. Once you’ve claimed the upgrade, Microsoft will keep you updated for the supported lifetime of the device....

Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1.

Re: Windows 10 Will Be A Free Upgrade

That's awesome news! Looks like they really need to get the user base to move and they're willing to meet us half way. Personally I'm still happy Win 7.

I need to read the fine print before jumping in...for example what happens after the 1st year if I want to reformat?...I like to frequently reformat my hard drive (every 4-6 months)...what happens if I upgrade my hardware?...people are excited about the 'free' part but there are still a lot of unanswered questions

The vision of Windows 10

Re: Windows 10 Will Be A Free Upgrade

Wondering if an OEM version of windows 7 will qualify for an upgrade.

Very happy at this news.

I guess it helps them consolidate all the different versions.

Giving away a free upgrade helps them close out XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1

They will save a bundle on maintenance.

Is there an article somewhere on the new governmental NSA spyware backdoors hidden deep in the new OS? And how much M$ was paid to include it so that it can be given away at no loss of profit?

Who was it that said: If you can think it you can do it.

Re: Windows 10 Will Be A Free Upgrade

Apple gives away the OS and the upgrades are free, I heard a long time ago about W8 getting it for free but not 7?

Doesn't it make you wonder about the Government Development Research grants that M$ might have received? .... And possibly Apple?

Re: Windows 10 Will Be A Free Upgrade

I'm reading that Hololens is a serious feature, like seriously?

What does that thing weigh? If the videos they're showing are real then it looks totally awesome!
But hows that work? Is it self contained or does it require a Win 10 box nearby and wireless connection?

Re: Windows 10 Will Be A Free Upgrade

I don't want any files I create to be on the cloud. I paid $9 for Office Professional Plus 2013 and the install was cloud based, I could not customize the installation nor can I change the install configuration. Of course I opted out of the Office cloud feature much like you opt out of signing in to MS when you boot Windows 7. I want my OS on removable media in my hand. I would rather pay some money to have a stand alone copy of any OS.

Re: Windows 10 Will Be A Free Upgrade

I guess you can download a ISO and burn a hardcopy, that's what I've done with everything from technet and it works fine?

I hope you are right, I am sure you will be able to download a ISO. I installed the new version of the Technical Review last night. It seems to be fairly well polished. No problems yet.
