Well I'm Finally Giving in To Windows 10

Hi Everyone,

I am on call quite a bit from home and I will have to keep Windows 7 on one of my rigs out of necessity and the software and VPN I work with.

I'm planning to upgrade the device in my signature to Windows 10 and add a few other items. I need a little bit of help from my friends here at ABX

Should I do the update and then a clean install or should I go with the new full clean install without doing the update? Do you guys really like Windows 10 better than 7?

I read here that some of you were able to install Office 2010 on Windows 10, is there a special trick to this?

Ken, I'm leaning toward one of the new Dell's either the 34 like you purchased or the brand new UP2716D. I have an Asus 970 Strix OC will that be adequate for the 34 if I'm not using it for any heavy gaming or will I need a 980?

Any other advise will be greatly appreciated.

I've missed you all!

Re: Well I'm Finally Giving in To Windows 10

Hi Miles good to see you posting, your 970 will be perfect for the 34" Dell (great monitor by the way).....I just did the upgrade and was perfectly happy with it, the only reason i did a clean install is because of my new Samsung 950 Pro...really liking W10...wouldn't go back to seven..I have Office 2013 installed with no problems, I even have Quicken's 2009 installed and it works just fine. Keep us informed on now things are going, always good to hear from!

Nice monitor Miles, can't wait until I get a Dell. Windows 10 is OK but first time I'm having browser issues with IE11 and Edge. You should have no problems running Office 2010. Good luck!

If you are intending to utilize the free upgrade, I think you had to upgrade first, and then later you could do a clean install.

I think that might have changed with the "Threshold 2" though.
Supposedly one can use the Windows 7/8/8.1 keys to do the clean install.

Do note though, I ran into a bit of trouble when I upgraded my system,
then swapped in a new SSD for the OS, and tried to do a clean install on the
new SSD. Activation balked.

There was some talk, as things might have been better if I signed into a Microsoft account.

Re: Well I'm Finally Giving in To Windows 10

When you install Win10 don't select 'use preferred preferences' and you can customize it a bit like choosing which browser to use like IE11 or Edge. You should go with Edge to see what it is like, you can change later.
