Re: System suddenly doesnt display anything. Powers on though. Please help.

1) : What motherboard do you have?

This way we can download manual, and help with specifics.
Some motherboards will have Leds which will indicate if They are getting power, and possibly other Led if "graphics card Ok"

2). You said you cleared bios by removing the battery and reinserting a new one. Did you move a jumper?

I tend to lean with what EXE was mentioning.
If you switched your cabling to use built-in graphics, the bios will have to
be set to that to pick up a signal. The manual will tell us what the bios default will be, either on-board or PCI-e slot.

3). Is it possible to test your Graphics card in another system?
Any powered on Leds on the graphics card?
(forgive me, I forget... fans running on the graphics card?)

===========================
I would try to clear the CMOS once again, specifically following the instructions from your manual, and try to get the Onboard - graphics working through the DSUB.

Re-seating the CPU would be one of the later things I try, (not because it is not a likely candidate, but because reseating the CPU might introduce a second problem and complicate diagnosis further) Also, the HDD led glowing for 5 seconds hints to me that the CPU is probably fine.

This is why I suggested trying another video card.

Re: System suddenly doesnt display anything. Powers on though. Please help.

This doesnt actually sound like a video card issue.
I think its either power supply issue or the board.
I understand the system hasnt been used much but electronics fail when they fail, lol. If you have another power supply try swapping to test.
Otherwise remove the memory and hard disks and cards from the board and try booting. BIOS screen should come up or it should beep, if not its the problem.

No i didn't touch any jumpers.

I tend to lean with what EXE was mentioning.

Usually from what ive experienced, when a graphics card fails etc, When ive pulled out the card and switched the cable to the motherboard DSub graphics port the system automatically picked the Dsub when there wasnt a graphics card present. This it does by default when ive worked with these systems. Never had to open BIOS to switch video outputs.

3). Is it possible to test your Graphics card in another system?

(forgive me, I forget... fans running on the graphics card?)

Its a simple graphics card actually. No leds on it and no fans either.

Not only the HDD led but even the main power led glows. The HDD reads for about 5 secs and then stops glowing when you reboot. Also a point to note is that (putting the video part of things aside) when i press the shut down or restart button. The system doesn't react kind of eliminating a video based issue ? because it the root cause was video based then irrespective of whether or not i can see the screen output, the system should shut down or reset when i press the relevant case buttons. It doesn't do anything which is apparent by watching the leds. I currently have to force shut down by holding down the power button for about 5 seconds.

Re: System suddenly doesnt display anything. Powers on though. Please help.

Hi plainman007

I'm not sure if you have access to that other machine you tested your monitor on, but if so, you can pull the power supply out of that machine and Set it next to the machine you are having issues with.

In "your" machine, unplug the "power connectors" only, to your hard drives/optical drives/and motherboard. You can leave the data cables connected.

The Power supply setting next to your machine, plug IT'S power connectors into the "motherboard only" leaving all other power connectors unplugged.

Plug in the power cable from the electrical outlet to the PSU setting next to your machine.

Now you can press the power button on your case and see if the monitor comes on.
if the monitor come on, you know your video card is good and you have a bad PSU.

If you still have the same issue as before, You need to seriously look at Motherboard or CPU being bad.
I still don't think it is a video card related issue, but it's easy enough to pop YOUR video card into the "known good" machine and test it.

I hope this has helped.
let us know what happens.

Re: System suddenly doesnt display anything. Powers on though. Please help.

Ok got a copy of the manual.

You got to do the BIOS clear CMOS procedure with the jumper.

When cleared, the default is to look at PCI Extended Graphic adaptors(PEG),then PCI graphics adaptors.....NOT Integrated graphics port (IGP) !

So if you clear cmos, don't expect the signal to go to the DSUB until BIOS is set that way...

Maybe ASUS could give you a utility to allow you to set the bios to PEG/IGP.
Or maybe they have a bios with it already preset to IGP.
Then again you would have the difficulty of flashing the bios, unlike the newer boards where one can just
press a button.

See attached files...

Re: System suddenly doesnt display anything. Powers on though. Please help.

Hi Everyone,

Over the last 2 days i took everything apart. Cleaned it all with IP alcohol. Brushed everything. Air blew the entire case with a vacuum. Put everything back together and its now working.

I noticed that when i removed everything and booted without the ram sticks or HDDs, the BIOS post error beep sounded signifying the absence of RAM.

Thanks to everyone for being very helpful.

You're welcome, amazing what a good cleaning/reseating will
do sometimes... Anywho good you're up and running again...

Re: System suddenly doesnt display anything. Powers on though. Please help.

Hey Guys,

Thanks to all of you again. .

Many of you suggested the take apart / isolate route, hence i was pushed to give it shot over 2 days. Else i would have opted the shorter path to just scrap the board and ultimately having to change the processor too just to change out the board.

Many thanks again to all of you.
