BitTorrent anybody?

Ever use BitTorrent's? This came out around Napster if I remember correctly but I never really used this. I understand it is a peer to peer file transfer and that the torrents are compressed/encrypted files and you have to have a special program to open them and they can come in multi-archive like WinRAR can produce. Anyway, I have never use them but my router support has a new ASUS utility called: ASUS Download Master Utility.

It allows a browser plugin to make is a piece of cake to handle bit torrent files. I was wondering who uses bit torrents and for what? Movies? If it is useful I might download and install it.

ASUS Download Master Utility 2.2.2.8

Re: BitTorrent anybody?

Good question, I've thought of using it years ago.
But never tried it, would be interesting if someone
here uses it, and would chime in...

Hi Sandog

I do use Bittorrent but not on a daily basis.
I do not own a television, so my computer is my only source of entertainment.
Mainly I use it to download movies, but it can be used to download pretty much anything you can think of off the internet (The savoury, and the not so savoury as well) if you get my meaning.

There are many bittorrent clients to choose from, I use The Original BitTorrent Client, no frills no thrills and just ignore the advertisements that they recently included with that client.

I will strongly recommend that anyone using "any" bittorrent client to also have a good anti virus/anti malware program installed and definitions kept up to date.

I am not familiar with ASUS Download Master Utility. Until I read more on it, I would not know if it would be considered as a bittorrent client.
I'll have to get back to you on that.

As for locating files that you might want to download, There are torrent sites, Similar to using google to find what you might be looking for.
I have a few torrent sites bookmarked.
You can use google - example - Best torrent sites 2016
But be forewarned, most of these sites are filled with pop-up ads ect.ect.

I hope I answered some of your questions

Re: BitTorrent anybody?

@Sandog, and anyone else, be aware that BitTorrent has historically and frequently been associated with illegal distribution of copyright material and there is no privacy built in.
Due to the nature of the client configuration users can end up distributing these materials without realising it. Ip addresses and torrent transfer details are stored on the network and as such users risk prosecution by the copyright owner at any time for distributing content illegally.

Having said that, theres also a wealth of licensed material available of course.

Re: BitTorrent anybody?

Thanks Zap for somewhat validating my feelings on this subject.

I really don't know enough about this, to feel good about using it.

I think most of the benefit is for the distributors who have a need to push out
vast quantities of info, say like Nvidia when they update their drivers.

I look at it very much like Windows update in version 10, where you can allow your computer to get and send the Windows updates to other computers on your local Lan from behind your firewall. This greatly reduces the burden on Microsoft servers as they don't have to push out each update to millions of waiting computers.

However, with BitTorrent you have somewhat given your permission to distribute stuff, using your networking hardware as a conduit
