Re: Time running out for free upgrate to Win 10

Hi Al,
I'm just not fond of the flat (material design) style.
I have mine tweaked as well and it's OK. I use Start10. Like I said, function over form. ;-)
Here's a screenshot of my desktop.
Regards,
Peter

Re: Time running out for free upgrate to Win 10

Thanks, Peter. Cool looking desktop!

Another little nicety I appreciate in W10 is the underline that appears under taskbar icons when the corresponding program is open, as can be seen in your screenshot.

Best regards,
-- Al

I'm going to pull the trigger at the last moment, because I am cheap and like freebies, but I'm not sanguine about it.

I hate Microsoft extortion.

Re: Time running out for free upgrate to Win 10

I've got a laptop stuck on Win7 because I use the built in virtual machine to run an old app that I need for business. But I don't mind so long as its supported.

As for Win10, I don't like the default GUI at all. Its targeting tablet, not desktop and consequently has a few annoyances. They've also kinda dumbed it down a bit by hiding or removing tweaks and settings. Obviously aiming to make the experience as simple as possible for the non tech user.

What they should do is work on instant-on and find a way to replace the whopping big registry architecture with something else based on just in time logic...

But yeah, we do have to upgrade just to ensure we get support, especially security patches.

Hi Zap,

Just right-click the start icon and you can call up the familiar Windows 7 type of control panel, as well as various other administrative functions.

Consistent with my earlier comments I'd recommend taking the plunge if and only if you have a drive image you can fall back on (which I wouldn't be without in any case, to prevent the possibility of having to reinstall and re-setup all of my software in the event of drive failure), and if and only if you can fit in several hours for preparation of the installation medium, the installation process itself, and initial familiarization and tweaking.

Best regards,
-- Al

That's the whole problem. I can't spare the time - at all.
I think I've decided to stick with win7 and buy a win10 a couple years from now.

Re: Time running out for free upgrate to Win 10

I didn't understand the excitement in this thread but I finally opened it and I am glad I did. I checked the Windows 10 x64 ISO and it has grown from 3.04GB's to 3.43GB's. I should have had this version when I just reinstalled Windows for the new RVE10.

Here is what I highly recommend. Get your free copy now and it will work later.

First you should get a USB 3.0 drive. I just copied 3.43GB from my USB 3.0 drive to my Sammy 850 Pro and it took around 10sec. Windows installation is swift, you don't even have time to get a cup of coffee. The drive should be formatted fat32 which has a 32GB limit. I have a dedicated drive for Windows, only Windows and nothing but Windows resides on my drive 24/7.

Here is a great drive, very dependable, built like a tank, and cheap. There is a $3.00 coupon code available if you agree to receive the NE newsletter I believe.

ADATA S102 Pro 16GB Advanced USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model AS102P-16G-RGY-Newegg.com

To get Windows 10, go here and get the DL tool and follow the instructions.

Windows 10

Now you will have a free copy of Windows 10 available for later if you decide to install. You should be able to activate it from your previous Win7/8 registration key but you will probably have to make a phone call.

I really don't think your W7 key will work after July 29th...

Re: Time running out for free upgrate to Win 10

I just found this....

"A few logistical questions remain unanswered. For example, you can currently use a product key for Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 to activate the corresponding edition of Windows 10. Come July 30, Microsoft's activation servers should stop accepting those keys. But we won't know until that day comes."

Re: Time running out for free upgrate to Win 10

Yeah, I could see that dilema but I have already installed Windows 10 and I have a unique Win10 registration key, not my old Win7/8 key I used before.

So, what you can do is temporarily install Windows 10 using your old Win7/8 key and then talk to MS about getting a new key Win10 like I did. I had to talk to MS after my second and third install, my previous key would not work.

Re: Time running out for free upgrate to Win 10

Well I caved in, and here I sit, staring at my windows 10. My first impression is fairly negative. Getting to my hosts file feels worse than breaking into Fort knox. (OK, I've never broken into Fort Knox).

Maybe there is a quicker way, I haven't really looked around much, but it takes me 10 clicks to get into my hosts file.

I unpinned all the junk from the task bar.

Four clicks and a long scroll to get to my command prompt.

My notepads look crappy. I have extremely bad eyesight and any change, even slight changes, can be very difficult for me (it's a bit hard to explain, but my view is largely based on 'habit'. Looking at my notepad now (which is my work station), I have a very hard time actually seeing it. (again, hard to explain).

I am not impressed so far, not at all.
