Re: Unreal Tourmanet 3 Black Edition Again.....

My favorite game bar none. I have to say my life is complete after running for years when that game came out in '99. I should go back and play the original, it is really good but graphics are old. I remember the old Liandri station with the ripper, pure bliss. There use to be so many people playing that game 24/7 that I would wait hours to get into my favorite servers.

I figured out the Cam software to show me FPS cpu and gpu usage and other stuff, very nice, just had to set it up on what you want it to show and then hit shift + o to enable it when gaming...here's what my rig does on Unreal...lol

Re: Unreal Tourmanet 3 Black Edition Again.....

Are you playing online? Ever play bombing run? Lot's of fun with online players, that is UT2003/2004 though.

I have the UT99 Game of the Year Edition, UT2004, and UT3 Black Edition all on Steam.

You know how I have lots and lots of hardware pics? Well it all started by taking lots and lots of UT pics. I still have them.

Re: Unreal Tourmanet 3 Black Edition Again.....

If I were to gauge how enjoyable and how effective Unreal Tournament became a part of my life I would say it was at least 3X bigger than ABXzone has been. And I will share something else, when UT dissolved and people left and servers died it was a huge letdown for me. I played to the very end on one of the last popular servers up to a few years ago. That is why the dissolution of ABXzone was never that hard, I had been through the same thing with UT. UT was so huge with players and mods I thought it would never end but it did. People's lives change and they move on and I realize that very well.

You remember playing through the original Half Life? I do and it was a mere footnote compared to UT for me.

Yeah you had a good career. I love Salmon.

Half Life was the first video game I ever played and the whole series for me is my all time favorite!

UT2k3/2k4 BR was excellent. I had a great time with that game mode (and TDM). Miss those days.

I have UT3, but lost the code, D'OH!

Re: Unreal Tourmanet 3 Black Edition Again.....

You won't believe this but I just played from start to finish UT Game of the Year Edition off Steam. I am talking the original 1999 version. I had a difficult time with the resolution. What I hate/like about Steam is they update for you but you also have little control on editing INI or games system files and especially adding on packs. I have all the old great UT addon packs for giant maps. Some are from EPIC but they all auto-install to the games default directory and STEAM uses its own folder. Anyway, really enjoyed the game. Took a long while to get use to it but when I finally got to the final map to face XAN (the Alpha and Omega) in Hyperblast, I was 6 kills down but came back and beat him on the first try 15 to 13. I remember my first time playing that map back in 2000 probably and it was nerve racking fighting Xan. I think it took 20 tries to finally beat him. He was very intimidating at the time.

Capture.JPG

Game brought back good memories each map I played. It seemed like they were from different times and games but they all came back. Remember the sub pen? Anyway I was surprised how basic the game seemed and how short the maps were. I guess a lot of coding went into them at the time. One thing that made UT so great for me even though I had no previous experience in a game like that to judge by, was the guns. The ripper, flak cannon, goop gun, pulse gun, sniper rifle, etc. Those were all marvelous weapons. I am glad I finally went back and played it again one more time.

Re: Unreal Tourmanet 3 Black Edition Again.....

BTW, I have a secret for all you STEAM old game players. If you drop an old game in your wishlist and leave it there, 2-3 weeks later you will get a STEAM email with the game drastically reduced to get you to buy it. I put C&C Tiberium Wars plus the addon Kane's Wrath in my basket and it was like $17ea. I got an email saying they were reduced to $3.75ea (75% discount). Likewise for a new Borderlands 2 addon (%50 discount) down to $5.

I think UT had a lot more going for it at the time than Quake in many ways, not least the community.
HL was a solitary experience for me, I never got into the online thing with it.
UT was all frantic action and frags whereas HL was awesome combat and friendly AI and exploration and problem solving, quite different games.

The poor AI in most recent games is very dissapointing.

UT won a ton of awards in many categories and even made new ones. One of the coolest things about UT was the music. The only other game that came close to the original soundtrack of UT was one of the Quakes. UT was a very exciting game. I have probably played in at least a couple of hundred different maps over the years. One of the best things I liked about UT was the outer world or space maps. Try Facing Worlds, outer space looks so cool.

HL was eerie and scary at the same time. The characters and settings seemed real and there was nothing but your adrenaline to keep you going. I don't recall music as much. IMO DooM was a little like old HL. You had scary creatures and you climbed around in bathroom ceilings and stuff and there were puzzles or at least secrets.
