File History on W10 is Fantastic!

I used to use Sync Toy to backup my stuff onto external and internal backup drives....now its File History built into W10, I have it on my 500 gig Samsung 840 ssd and anytime I put any pictures, music ,or use my documents it is automatically backed up to my D drive (Samsung ssd ) using file history....GREAT TOOL.....

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

Hey FV. Glad you like it. Been using it for sometime now with no issues. I prefer to use it with my internal spinner vice an external drive. Works for me also.

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

I think you can have as many as you want, provided only one is setup at a time.

I use FH mainly for archive purposes. You must use FH to restore the files, if not, you then have to check the file attributes to ensure "read-only" is deselected. No biggie, however I have a bunch of database files, i.e. Quicken/Quickbooks and Outlook, so it's a bit of a chore.

For file backups to just about anywhere, I use GoodSync.

File Sync Backup Software | GoodSync

Have a good day.

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

Go into the FH folder. Pick any file recently saved and verify the attributes. When I mucked with it, it always changed the "read" attribute when a file was backed up.

In the beginning when I setup FH, stupid MS would not let you select any internal drive. Had to use an external drive. There was a workaround for that. I guess now they fixed it so you can readily select a internaL data drive.

I'll check that the next time a save a file and see if it changes back....yesterday i was adding some music to a sd card for my wifes phone and deleted a album from my music by accident and I went to my FH on my D drive and copied and pasted that album back to my C drive and worked perfect!

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

Yeah, I am curious about that. Copy that same file to a different external stick/drive and see what happens.

I just copied it to a thumb drive and it worked no problem...it was a album, about 140 mbs...

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

...and upon further research:

"Read-only: When set, indicates that a file should not be altered. Upon opening the file, file system API usually does not grant write permission to the requesting application, unless the application explicitly requests it. Read-only attributes on folders are usually ignored."

I can see where altering a file in the backup set could cause havoc with it's database. Looks like copying a file would not alter the FH internal database. Think I'll leave the attributes alone.

I just went back to re enable read only on FH and it had already changed itself....

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

This sounds pretty handy, but whats the performance impact?
And exactly which files does it cover?

I thought that would happen. We better leave it alone.

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

Got mine setup to do a file backup hourly. No performance impacts I can feel.

You have the option to select what files and the frequency. If your using OneDrive, it'll automatically back those up as well.
