Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

I started it, it is about 10 folders deep lol. This must be new with all the updates I just received. I used the old version but it took up too much disc space.

I wish it had SyncToy's abiliity to mirror the folder, in other words delete and copy. Appears you have to wait a month minimum to delete old files. Maybe I'
m wrong.

Haven't tried it on my backup drive, can it be setup for multiple instances?

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

It will not mirror as it is not intended to Sync. It's designed for backups.

You can restore a file to just about anywhere including external sticks/drives.

Don't know what you mean about multiple instances, you can setup for varying frequencies, you can do a manual backup, and I have yet to see a way to automatically backup to multiple locations.

For mirroring, I use GoodSync.

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

For example, right now it is backing up to my internal D drive. But if I want to back up to my external USB drive will it do both with two separate profiles or do I have to change the drive back and forth?

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

I have not seen a way to have two separate profiles.

What I do is to use GoodSync (SyncToy should work) to copy the FH folders to my WD Elements External Drive every now and then for additional assurance.

I'm just doing the same Jim, installed sync toy and backing up file history from D drive to G drive using contribute, then I'll make another pair of drives from D drive to my external drive in my BlackX box! Thanks for the tip!

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

It is nice if it auto backups, I have to test it out after an hour. I did it first time and it did not get some of the files. I noticed it only copied folders out of my User_Name root directory and not the standalone files that were in it.

Not clear on what 'clean up versions' means. Is this were it deletes files on the right side (backup drive) if they are no longer on the left side? I think what is going to happen is, if you make file A and later change file A, it will not overwrite but save a copy of the original. After a month, it will finally delete the old file A. Now if you have a file B backed up and later delete it, I wonder if after a month it will delete file B from the backup? Otherwise, the backup will end up getting big and dirty.

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

FH does auto backup, you can set how fast you want, I use contribute on synctoy and it only adds new files to your backup pair of drives.....

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

I've been spoilt as a Mac user - we've had Time Machine since 2007 (OS X Leopard) - best thing ever!

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

Google is amazing, I highlighted Time Machine above and the first hit was MAC's Time Machine. I thought my chances of the right time machine would be slim, Google looks where you are searching from the sneaky bastards.

Time Machine is really awesome, it even works over wireless using a Time Capsule, or an external drive attached to an Airport Extreme. Not to mention I've been an extremely happy camper using Apple's networking products for over a decade now.

Are backing these up to iCloud? If yes, you can access them at iCloud.

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

Thanks. I was referring to the folders within a Time Machine backup.

Re: File History on W10 is Fantastic!

Speaking of backups. Last week while using Autruns, I inadvertantly deleted the wrong thing. System would not boot at all. Recovery/Restore points was useless.

Had to use an image. I had both a Macrium Image and a Win10 App Image. Wanna guess which one worked?

The Macrium image choked, the Win10 image restored flawlessly. Food for thought! Just saying.
