Re: Prey 2017

Sound like your enjoying the game.

It was such a voluminous and beautiful setting to explore. That was ruined by the constant run-ins with the aliens. Never really had time to relax and explore. Especially the Arboretum! Nevertheless, I made sure I archived my saved-games. May go at it again someday, not now, as I enjoy the tranquility.

Enjoy.

I want more exploration features in our games. I remember I loved finding all those beautiful places and exploring them in Morrowind. I loved the solitude of STALKER and the freedom to hunt for artefacts and see strange places.
In this game I'm so busy running from Typhon and managing inventory theres no real time for true exploration. Its like you enter a new area and its "wheres the recycler? Wheres the replicator? Quick collect some junk! Get to the objectives ASAP, oh theres an interesting area, oops, no objectives there, do I really want to waste all my ammo and health packs going in there?

Re: Prey 2017

Something is not right. There was more to it after you leave the bridge!

Also, I only noticed a dozen or so aliens.

Something is not right!

There's some glitch in the game using that goo gun or whatever it is!

Re: Prey 2017

LOL, well I've encountered that collision detection problem a few times myself where you can literally fall through walls. Looking at a bit of the start of that video it looks like those spots are constant because I've encountered a couple of those exact ones myself. Up until now I thought it was random, lol.

The other problems are minor clipping issues and infrequent texture flashing.
Overall performance feels great on my rig.

When I fell through I either fell back, or was only a short distance from where I was. I didnt try to short cut my way through anything. That guy's gone to extremes, lol.

I got some Prey time in last night and I'm currently in the Cargo bay. This area's more fun than the others. More relevant puzzles and exploration options.

The NPC behaviour after the scripted events is over is woefully primitive though. Theres no way you could ever mistake these dumb robots for real people, which contrasts sharply with all the natural emails I've had to read that have developed their characters along the way. Its like going back to gaming of the 90's as they patrol their waypoints and repeat the same things over and over. Best not to chat with them otherwise it breaks immersion.

Re: Prey 2017

Never experienced the glitches indicated. Perhaps I was running too fast!

From Cargo Bay forward, things get real interesting. Was glad to finally see some humans!

I tend to turn everything over to see whats underneath or climb on top of things to see what may be there. Thats when I fall through walls.
I've noticed the game always shows hints of the hidden stuff. Bits sticking out or not fully covered, so I probably dont need to.

Do you remember the cargo bay where you had to open a door with heaps of Typhon waiting outside? The humans were all pretty nervous about the door opening, but I solved it without any of them having to fire a shot, but I'm curious about whether they would have been effective in a fire fight?

Re: Prey 2017

Oh man, I'm external currently trying to find the Coral Nodes, and for flips sake this is difficult
I've got cystoids, techno paths and rogue operators everywhere. If they eliminated the cystoids it would be a much more enjoyable game right there.

I notice a little hitching when going EVA, especially when turning 360 and surrounded by cystoids.

Re: Prey 2017

Transcribe: Zap Talos 1- Bridge:
<sounds of steel tearing, glass breaking>
I'm on the Bridge, we're going to end this once and for all,
Alex - where are you? January, what are you doing?
<shouting in the background, alien screeching>
No, no! this cant be happening?!
Is this all there IS? OMG
Nooooooo!
end of archive

And end of game

Well, this game really delivers a mixed bag of stuff, doesn't it?
Once you get a few mods going and a few abilities you kinda morph from a rat like strategy of hugging the walls and keeping your head down to a more open frontal assault style.
I think the game is way too difficult in the beginning but oddly it gets you intimately involved in the environment more than many other games do. I mean once you've died 20 times in an area and learned about every single nook and cranny and tried 20 different kinds of ways to progress you do get close to it.

The story and characters become more important as you go along, which is a little unusual because in a lot of other games the story is really not important at all with the feeling that the developers didn't even read it themselves, but in Prey its important.

The game can be played on several levels; as an evolving puzzle game/story or a fairly traditional first person shooter (mostly) or as a stealth game (mostly).

I think what stood out for me the most is how serious it is. I mean this game never lets up on the pressure, the intensity or the urgency. The only relief is sometimes when you make a stupidly obvious mistake and get yourself killed and have to laugh at yourself. Dying in this game is normal and frequent.

Visually its very good and many of the effects are first rate. The environment is believable, even with the graphical annoyances that are there. Its stylised, but absolutely feels believable from the first person perspective. I think they could have spent more on the alternate history reality thing, the references to it here and there were just a little too shallow although intriguing. Ditto for some of the background crew stories that were going on.

I've posted about the poor combat A.I. already, but the variety of enemies and attacks does mitigate this well, the game is definitely a challenge.

Immersion is good, but frequently interrupted by contrivances, such as resources scattered around the environment in a generous way or flashing textures. I hate that, why, WHY not give us an option to disable that? Also, time freezing whenever you go into inventory is just not right. The hacking mini game is very annoying.

Actually there is a lot that is great to this game but I think its patchy.
Its clearly striving to be more than it is, or perhaps its just trying to be the best at what it is. Its best to just accept it for what it is.

At the end of the day what I can say is that its a lot of hard work.
I think you get out what you put into it and the harder you work at it the more rewarding it is to play.

As to the ending, well I survived, but I don't know if Earth will survive.
I tried 3 different "endings", although the endings I saw are really just a few minutes of cut scenes and dialog at the end. There were no key branches in the story leading to radically different paths, at least not for me.

Is it worth playing? Absolutely if you're into the Sic-fi horror survival genre.
Otherwise, ymmv.

Some of my highest stats:
Recycler Junk Collected: 1490
Food consumed: 309
TranStar crew and visitors found: 232
Neuromods installed: 136
E-mails read: 128
Mimics killed: 126
Most Mimics killed in a 5 second burst: 4
My lowest stat was enemies killed by falling: 1

It doesn't say how many Cystoids hit me or Military Operators lasered me, but that would have to be in the high hundreds

Congrats Zap. It's an achievement in itself to finish this particular game.
