Internet cable problem

Hi guys,

Need some advice.

For a while I have been having connection issues with my cable modem.
It drops connection and then can't reconnect.

Unplugged both the modem and wireless...yada yada...
Won't reconnect...

Until I disconnect the cable to the modem, either at the wall or at the modem.
Then it reconnects...

Done this several times...

I figure if I established connection, it would stay connected.

But no, I always seem to have to physically disconnect the cord then reattach before it would re-establish

Grounding issue?... Some sort of static build up till discharged?

Bad cable wire?
Bad House wiring?

Any advice.

Re: Internet cable problem

Call the cable company, I had a bad drop from the pole to my house and ever sense they put in a new cable from the pole to my house no problems. How old is your modem also?

Re: Internet cable problem

I've had the modem changed 3/4 times, wireless changed 2/3 times
They ran a new wire from their breakout box outside to my house.

They come in the house check the levels always seem good.

You need to have matching firmware in your MODEM for the service they are providing you. My service actually went down once when they upgraded it because they did not update the firmware in the MODEM. Also you probably need a DOCS capable MODEM nowadays to get the best bandwidth over cable. We are stretching cable to the limit.

Re: Internet cable problem

The weird thing is, is that I have to physically disconnect the wire to
reestablish the connection.

I can't believe that I am breaking the connection, and then re-establishing the physical link each time.

It doesn't matter where I unscrew the cable. Once I unscrew it at the wall or at the box, I am then able to re-establish Internet connectivity.

I don't know electric stuff, but seems like unscrewing it might let some internal wire discharge static to ground?

Re: Internet cable problem

When you disconnect power to the MODEM you reset your IP address. Go to CMD window and type ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew

See if that helps.

One can not renew an IP address until a physical connection is established.
When this happens, I don't have the interbet, download or upload lights.
Just power and the link light from pc to modem.

To reestablish the lights, i must disconnect the cablle that runs from the modem to the wall, then reattach.

No amount of recycling modem, wireless router or pc helps.

My son says he tried a different cable to no avail.

Re: Internet cable problem

If you do 192.168.100.1 it should take you into the modem info. You can pull that info up even if the modem isn't connected to the coax.

Re: Internet cable problem

The key is, what are the signal levels when it is down.
Unfortunately, optimum blocks the page with one of its own, telling me to check the coax.
