ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula

Hey ABX friends,
I think I might finally build a new rig to replace my old Z87. And, if I do, I think want to use the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula. I really don't need all the OC features it has, but I want the high quality components, full armor and especially the full back plate.

So, here's my parts list so far:

ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula
Intel Core i9-9900K

Amazon.com: Noctua NH-U14S - Premium CPU Cooler with NF-A15 140mm Fan (Brown): Computers Accessories

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 Desktop Memory Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B3200C16) at Amazon.com
OR
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Desktop Memory Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15) at Amazon.com

Amazon.com: Samsung 970 EVO 500GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E500BW): Computers Accessories
OR
Amazon.com: WD Black 500GB High-Performance NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD - Gen3, 8 Gb/s - WDS500G2X0C: Computers Accessories

And, reuse the Corsair 550D case, AX750 PSU and Asus Strix GTX 970 4GB from my current rig, for now.

I figure this would serve me well for the next 5+ years...

Opinions?

Re: ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula

Sounds Great, the only thing is make sure of clearance with the top psi-e slot for the video card and the Noctua U14S (I was going to use it on my build but it would block the top slot that's why I went with the one in my sig), Noctua has a compatibility chart on there site. Being a Samsung fan I would go with the 970 Evo...but with whatever you choose is going to be a Kick butt system! Keeps informed on your build!

Thanks for the tips FV!
I'll keep these in mind. I'm not in a hurry, so I'm going to wait for reviews and prices to settle...

Any ides when the 9900K is coming out? By the way I love your MB choice, I had a earlier model and LOVED it, still going strong in my wifes rig!

No clue, but like I said, I'm not in a hurry.
If Asus still made the Sabertooth, that's what I would use, but they don't. And, the ROG Formula meets all my requirements and also has the better on-board audio, which is a bonus.

Hi PeterT

Your list of parts are top quality

The reviews on the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula and the i9 9900K is exactly what I'm waiting on also.
I heard both October 1 and October 8 thrown around for the motherbarod, and October 20th for the cpu.

For me personally, I plan on going with the 32GB 3200Mhz ram kit, but either of the two you have listed are great choices.

I'm planing on going with Intel Optane SSD 900P (480GB, AIC PCIe 3.0 x4, 20nm, 3D XPoint) for the OS drive.

I, like fvbounty, am a fan of the Samsung SSD's
For Data storage, most likely will go with SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 2TB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe 1.3 64L V-NAND 3-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V7E2T0BW.
IF the motherboard/cpu will alow it to run at full speed.

If not, I'll go with WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX.

In the meantime, I'm hanging in here waiting on reviews

Re: ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula

Good Morning Exc, boy you and PeterT are going to have really nice systems when you get done, have you seen the new Intel 905 optanes? I think they are faster than the 900P, ands by the way my 900P is working like a champ, only 90 gigs on the 280 I have, but I'm using my old Samsung 950 Pro NVMe for my games drive which helps out with storage. Can't wait for you two to get your stuff and start on your new builds!

Re: ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula

You cant go wrong as far as performance and reliability go with those components, unless Asus or Intel manage to ship some crazy design defects... been known to happen!

Off-topic: While its great to see a new system build being planned I'm just curious as to whats driving it for you Peter? I'm struggling to find any games my old rig and 1080 cant handle?

Exc, thanks for the input. I look forward to watching your build.

Zap, it's not performance (or lack thereof) that's driving my desire to build a new rig; it's the new technology. I want a rig that's "current" and will be reliable for another 5+ years.

not quite sure I want to spend $1300 on it or go with the 480 modle

Re: ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula

Well, I just bought the first part for my new build:
SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 250GB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe 1.3 64L V-NAND 3-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive MZ-V7E250BW - Newegg.com
Got it for 80$, no tax, free 2 day shipping. Couldn't pass that up.

I'll use this for my Windows boot partition only, so 250GB is plenty. Games and other large programs will be installed on my 500GB SATA Samsung EVO and storage on my WD Black HDDs.

The parts acquisition begins...

Intel Core i9-9900K Coffee Lake 8-Core, 16-Thread, 3.6 GHz (5.0 GHz Turbo) LGA 1151 (300 Series) 95W BX80684I99900K Desktop Processor

Available for preorder at newegg = $579.99

Release Date: 10/19/2018. Limit 1 per customer.

That is a lot of cash, To be honest, I will have to see some serious reviews on it's performance as this is just an 8086K with 8 cores and a soldered tim.
it has 16 "direct" pci lanes with 24 more on the PCH = 40 pci lanes.

I will make my decissions after the release and some reviews.

I got my Intel I7 7820K for under $500 8 core and 16 thread with 28 lanes on the cpu so your right Exc that is pricey, mine is 3.6 and 4.5 turbo, I would rather have the extra lanes than the 500 turbo.
