Thumbs up

A lot of credit should go to Black Viper... I mean, who else has shared their intense knowledge of tweaking computers in the form of a website? This guy is awesome and he really knows his stuff. I have run all of the service tweaks and have not had any issues.

Double your performance.I got this off ZDNet Forums.I take no credit for this. This a Cut & Paste

Hi Everone

Did you know that right now as your watching this post, there are 83 WindowsXP-based services working in the background? and that these services drain your system resources, as you've never seen before? and that without them you can still retain the same functionality and double-the performance you had before?

This is a tweak that I have tried couple a days ago, through a tweak post on www.tweakxp.com, and directed me to a URL that specialized in Tweaking these services.

But first of all let me introduce you to these services.

1.Open the run command, "Press your windows key+Letter R"

2.type in the box, "services.msc" without the quotes and hit enter.

3. A list of all the services curretnly working on you PC will appear.

4. For a better viewing, click the view menu, and click Details, this will show you the services in more detail

5.click the extended tab, at the bottom of the page, to get a whole picture of these services.

6.now if you simply click any of these services, you'll get a full description of what they are, and what do they do.

Now to the best part, the Tweaking, but before this I have to warn most of you that: Most of these tweaks are preferably, and I stress on the word preferably, applied to standalone computers, which it means those computers not acting as Workstations, Servers, or Linked over a Networked. Just Those that are simply connected to the Internet, and not connected to any other computers. As some of these tweaks are primarily dependent on disabling the Server, and Workstation capabilities of Windows XP Home or Professional.

Also, Some of these tweaks are not universally applicable, they may apply to the Home or the professional edition only.

Now to Tweak

1.Copy the following URL to your address

http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

2. Follow Procedures carefully, and read what does each service does before you do anything

3.Again, this procedure may take you a whole lot of time, but it pays off will, and the performance of your comuter will peak, I mean it, but if you feel that you may screw things up don't do it

Finally, Thank you for reading through this whole thing

Best Regards
Ashraf Mohammed

About the first link, it's very helpful, but there are many like it out there. The one problem I have with this one is all the "recommended" settings are tailored to what the author does without considering what the everyday person would do. You HAVE to read more about each service you disable and you can't follow just the table on that page. To a newer or rookie service tweaker, this might be confusing.

I have about 50 disabled services and no problems to report. Some of those services (Telnet as an exemple) are disabled for security reason. In Event Viewer it's normal to see errors about the disabled services so nothing to worry about.

I realized that if I need one of the disabled service it will popup on my screen saying that I need it and asking me if I want to activate it.

Have fun tweaking

Hi Dustyputer,

By disabling 50 services, did you win a lot on performance level?

I guess you "only" won on memory allocation, because once loaded, services do not cost anything if they're not run; and if they are run... well I presume it's because they are needed LOL.

Does everyone agree with this theory?

I never took the time to see if it was giving me more power or resources. I just disabled services that I don't need because I don't need them. My computer is always fast and always respond well to what I do.....

There are tweak packages on his site that will do it for you. Look for "Safepro Allstart" as an example. He also has it for Safe, Gamer, default, and Super tweak setups. It makes life very simple...
