Can you actually make money with a website?

I am always kicking around the idea of creating a website about some of my various hobbies, my stupid dog, whatever. Every single site I go to...and I mean EVERY SINGLE SITE has ads on it. Every one. Every single one.

Do any of you here that host sites or host ads actually make any money? Does a check come in the mail and you smile at the ease of life?

It seems that there has to be something to it, and after I create my website, I would like to throw some related ads on it.

I think the ads pay you by number of visitors, so unless you have thousands of friends you probably won't make more than a couple cents.

Unless you have a high traffic site, that is...right?

Yeah, and I think the ads check IP's and stuff so it can't just be the same person coming back over and over.

a lot of "free" web host services place ads on your site in return for the free hosting...they don't pay out.

and yes, you can only really make money if you have 100's of thousands of visitors...not just 10's of thousands (i have lots of experience with web advertising/marketing...unfortunately).

Not all sites are the same and what you've been told so far is very accurate. There are sites on the net that earn quite a bit of money from ads, but I'm talking ads with different arrangements than those discussed above. A few years ago Anandtech's profit was in discussion and it was strongly rumored that the site brought in a net income in the six figure range...I'm sure sites like Anad and others that have that huge draw and over 100,000 members and in excess of 25,000 hits daily do quite well. Hope that answers your question.

I don't know the stats on this site but it used to lose money before we got OCZ as a sponsor (not that long ago). It actually cost CJ money to run the site. For a while we had a burn rate indicator were the OCZ banner is and members would donate money to keep the site running.

The moral of the story is that you will probably lose money for years before you build up the traffic neccessary to make a site self sustaining. Unless you run a p0rn site .
